Top 3 Skin Care Tips For Chilly Weather

Skin Care Tips for Chilly Weather - SkinMedix.comSkin care is paramount; no matter where you live, you should always pay attention to the health of her skin. The Fall season has arrived and it brings about new challenges for skin. Keep reading for tips on avoiding skin problems associated with the chilly weather!

Use Sunscreen for Prolonged Trips Outside

When the summer season ends, some people may assume that sunscreen is unnecessary. You may believe that you won’t get a sunburn. However, this is not necessarily true. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, it is possible to expose the skin to the rays of the sun. Your skin may become red and uncomfortable. If you plan to spend a lot of time outside the home, sunscreen is vital.

We recommend: COOLA Sport SPF 45 Unscented Moisturizing Sunscreen. Especially designed for those long, active days in the sun, this unscented version of Coola’s SPF 45 organic moisturizing sunscreen is sweat resistant, delivering broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. This unique formula blends nutrient-rich, antioxidant extracts, like Ginseng, Evening Primrose and Arnica that help sooth and rejuvenate the skin. This product is endorsed by the American Lifeguard Association; and the best part – you won’t have a funny looking white nose.

Apply Hydrating Cream At Least Once a Week

The fall and winter seasons are dry, and this is not good news for your skin. You may discover that certain parts of the body are hard and flaky when the weather changes, but dry skin does not have to happen. Consider applying a hydrating cream to the skin at least once a week. Hydrating cream helps the skin retain moisture. It is less likely that you’ll have extremely dehydrated skin.

We recommend: NeoStrata Bio-Hydrating Cream. This high-strength emollient cream is designed to reduce the visible signs of aging and repair the barrier function of the skin, providing long-lasting moisturization. Gluconolactone inhibits the enzyme that can break down elastin, so it helps preserve skin’s elasticity and suppleness. This cream exfoliates and restores youthful skin texture without irritating even the most sensitive skin.

Take On a Healthy Diet

It is not enough to use sunscreen and moisturizing cream. In order to achieve excellent health for skin, you must take on a healthy diet. It is difficult to achieve smooth and clear skin if you live on junk food. Greasy and oily food can damage the skin, and you may wish to stay away from snacks that cause problems. Fruits and vegetables are your best friends in the fight for healthy skin!

Beautiful Skin in 5 Minutes

Beautiful Skin in 5 MinutesFor most of us, the day begins with a flurry of activity that starts long before we make it to the office, to school, or wherever our day takes us. No matter how pressed for time we are, great skin care shouldn’t be something that’s neglected, even when each minute counts. Believe it or not, even if you have less than five minutes, beautiful skin is completely possible by following these simple steps.

Be Prepared

Have all your skin-care items close by in a neat tray, including cotton pads and Q-tips. Just in case, leave a lip balm, like Dermalogica Renewal Lip Complex, and a heel exfoliant/balm, like Glytone Ultra Heel and Elbow Cream, on your bedside table so you can apply them before you fall asleep.

Know Your Routine

Even though the clock is ticking, it doesn’t mean you should skip taking care of every part of yourself. Knowing exactly what you should do and why you should do it will help with the flow of your skin-care steps.

Multi-Tasking Products Save Time

  • Use a moisturizer during the day that contains sunscreen so you don’t have to use a separate product. Try Revision Intellishade Tinted Moisturizer SPF 45. You can also use the same moisturizer you use at night if your foundation and pressed powder contain sunscreen. We recommend Jane Iredale PurePressed Base. This 4-in-1 concealer, powder, foundation and sunscreen that diminishes the look of pores and fine lines to give skin a healthy, flawless-looking finish in seconds!
  • A beautifully-formulated lip balm can also be used on elbows and heels.
  • Use a gentle water soluble cleanser, like Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser. Pair it with a well-formulated toner, like Obagi Nu-Derm Toner, that can remove last traces of makeup on your face, while giving your skin much-needed antioxidants and barrier repair ingredients.
  • If your face moisturizer is brilliantly formulated it can be the best “eye cream” you can use. We recommend Neocutis Bio Cream Bio Restorative Skin Cream because it is formulated with the same PSP and Human Growth Factors as their very popular Lumiere Bio Restorative Eye Cream.
  • The exact same exfoliant for your face can be applied on your elbows and chest to make those areas look smooth and younger. Try SkinCeuticals Micro Exfoliating Scrub. This mild exfoliating gel (safe for face and body) combines natural microbeads with gentle cleansing and hydrating agents to thoroughly cleanse pores and promote healthy cell renewal without damaging or drying skin.

Don’t Wipe Off Your Makeup

Using a water soluble cleanser first all over your face with a gentle wash cloth should get off all your makeup. Any leftover makeup can quickly be removed with a small amount of makeup remover. We love Jane Iredale Dot the I Makeup Removal Swabs. Aside from saving time, these pre-measured makeup remover swabs to not pull at your skin. Pulling and wiping at your skin tears your skin’s elastin fibers and can cause sagging. Think about women who wear heavy earrings and how their ear lobes become distended. That’s from the constant weight stretching out the skin’s elasticity.

Only Do the Essentials

Depending on your skin type, the products you need will vary. While you don’t want to skip the essential products, facial masks are optional (and time-consuming) and aren’t necessary to take great daily care of your skin.

Of Course, Products Do Matter!

Whatever brand you choose to build your routine around, the key to seeing results is making sure the products you use are brilliantly formulated without irritating ingredients and are the right texture for your skin type.

More Magazine’s Fall Beauty Shopping List

More Magazine's Fall Beauty Shopping ListFor the fourth year in a row, More Magazine asked More’s Opinionista Reader Panel to become grooming guinea pigs, testing falls’s new fragrances, cosmetics, and hair and skin products. To our excitement, Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer SPF 30 made it to #3 on this year’s Fall Beauty Shopping List! Keep reading to learn what these testers had to say about one SkinMedix’s favorite new products!

If reviews written in all caps are any indication of how beloved a product is, then testers were mad for this primer! “SO LOVED THIS PRODUCT,” said one. “I ADORED it,” said a second. “LOVED this product,” raved a third. An all-in-one sunscreen, makeup primer and skin treatment (the formula contains free-radical-fighting antioxidants and collagen stimulating peptides), it can be worn alone, as testers seemed to prefer, or under makeup to extend its longevity. “Great creamy texture and invisible coverage,” explained one tester. Another, who did top the primer with foundation, reported, “It was amazing how well it made my makeup stay on. O work outside in the sun, so for my makeup to still look good at the end of the day is a miracle.”

Use Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer SPF 30 to smooth away fine lines, brighten and prime for flawless skin and to prep for make-up application. Velvety silicones create an instantly smooth surface. Neutral tint helps balance tone and enhance luminosity and radiance. Peptides and AGE Smart actives help firm and shield against MMP and free radical damage, as sunscreens shield against sun damage. Wear alone over your moisturizer for visible smoothness and luminosity, or after moisturizer application and before foundation to help fill fine lines for a lasting make-up finish!

5 Surprising Face Washing Facts

5 Suprising Face Washing FactsWashing your face is a no-brainer, right? Well, not exactly. A recent study by Olay found that only 50% of women wash their face regularly. And even if you are among the half that does, most are not using the correct product rinsing properly, or treating their skin with the TLC it deserves. Read on and discover the secrets to proper face cleansing and watch your skin glow!

1. Treat Your Eyes With Care
Before you can start washing, you need to remove makeup — or else the cleanser can’t really reach your skin. If you’re left with raccoon eyes after washing, you need to take the extra step of dissolving mascara and other eye makeup. To remove eye makeup use a vegetable oil-based cleanser, such as Dermalogica PreCleanse, or an eye makeup remover. These oil-based products liquefy stubborn liner and makeup without rubbing or tugging on the delicate eye skin. And with your mascara down the drain, your cleanser can really do its job on the rest of your face.

King offers up her technique for gently wiping away eye makeup: put cleanser on a damp cotton pad, lightly press it on the eye area and wait a few seconds, and then sweep the cotton pad down over the eyelid and eyelashes (this is also the best way to prevent makeup from getting into the eye). Repeat as needed, circling in towards nose but always sweeping down over the lashes. Open the eye, fold the cotton pad, and gently swipe under the eye. Rinse off the makeup remover to get rid of residue.

2. Choose Your Cleanser Wisely
The first step to achieving clean, dewy skin is finding the right cleanser (and yes, you do need to use something besides just water). Your cleanser doesn’t need to be expensive, but it does need to be gentle and preferably non-foaming. “The majority of body soaps and liquid soaps are very drying on the skin. The face needs something that’s less drying and more gentle,” King says. The type of cleanser that is best for you depends on your skin type. “Oily skin tends to do better with a gel wash, which helps dissolve oil, makeup, and sunscreen,” says Jessica Wu, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at USC Medical School and a dermatologist in Los Angeles. We recommend Glytone Acne Gel. If you have normal skin, use a foaming lotion cleanser, like Elta MD Foaming Facial Cleanser. If your skin is dry or sensitive try a gentle creamy cleanser – PCA Skin Creamy Cleanser is our favorite!

3. Rub Your Skin the Right Way
For a gentle but thorough cleansing, your best tools are at your fingertips — in fact, they are your fingertips. “Your fingers do a terrific job and can actually provide a light massage during your cleanse that can stimulate circulation and promote lymphatic drainage,” says Jill Bucy, owner of Jill Bucy Skincare in Seattle. While over-washing and over-scrubbing can irritate sensitive skin, make redness and rosacea worse, and aggravate breakouts, some facialists do use facial sponges to help cleanse more thoroughly without the abrasiveness of a scrub or washcloth. This is especially helpful for acne-prone skin, which tends to get clogged, says Dr. Wu.

The SkinMedix Team are fans of the Clarisonic Skincare Brush. It cleans with sonic waves to gently exfoliate and it beeps at intervals to ensure you spend enough time washing each section of your face. (Click here to learn about the new Clarisonic Aria!) If you don’t invest in a brush, Dr. Scola recommends singing “Happy Birthday” to yourself twice while applying cleanser, which should roughly come out at 30 seconds.

4. Keep Things Lukewarm
When you are done cleansing, rinse thoroughly and repeatedly to remove cleanser, using your hands to cup water and bring it to your face. Experts recommend using tepid or lukewarm water to remove your cleanser. Water that’s too hot or too cold will only irritate skin and could cause broken capillaries.

5. Don’t Stop at the Sink
Cleaning involves more than just cleanser! Wash your hands thoroughly before you begin washing your face. And resist the urge to dry your face with the family hand towel that’s been hanging over the rack for several days. Bacteria can breed on the towel and be transferred to your clean, dewy face. When drying your face, Bucy urges you to be gentle and pat your face dry, as opposed to rubbing it with a towel. Use a soft, clean cloth that you only use on your face.

Washing your face is a part of your daily routine, but are you doing it the right way?

What’s Your Skin Care Personality?

What is Your Skin Care Personality? What dictates whether or not you spend ages on a rigorous cleansing regimen, or be content with a five-second splash? As little girls, we’re influenced by our mothers, and as grown women we’re likely to emulate her routine. If she used a cold cream cleanser and not much else, for instance, your ethos may well be that less is more. Friends can influence the types of products you use and the way you use them, and having a facial will usually inspire you to take a bit more time and care with your skin.

“I’ve noticed that women can generally be grouped into four ‘personality’ categories when it comes to the way we like to look after our skin,” says Noella Gabriel, Elemis director of treatment and product development. “There’s the woman who wants a straightforward, non-time consuming regime, one who chops and changes, and wants instant results, the stuck-in-a-rut woman, and the one who invests a lot of time and money into her skincare.”

1. The Minimalist
You favor a wash-off cleanser, and a moisturizer to make your skin feel more comfortable and less tight. You aren’t over-fussy with brands and like something that does what it says on the tube, and is simple and quick to use.

  • Pros: “You save time and money”, says Dr Leslie Baumann, dermatologist and author of The Skin Type Solution (Hodder & Stoughton). She adds that if you’re a minimalist by nature, it’s crucial to know your skintype. Someone who’s spending so little time on a routine needs the right products to combat oily or dry skin. “If you have skincare problems, look for a cleanser aimed to treat them, such as an acne cleanser, glycolic cleanser if skin is rough, or a moisturising one for dry skin,” she says.
  • Cons: Washing off with water is quick – but can be harsh for your skin, damaging the surface and inducing a tight feeling. “A lot of minimalist clients opt for “quick” foaming cleansers,” adds Amanda Birch, therapist director at top London salon, Michael John. “Avoid these if they contain sodium laureth sulphate – a harsh foaming agent that strips skin after a while and can cause sensitivity and premature aging.”
  • If you do one thing: “A pared-down skincare routine can work, but every six months change your moisturizer. This will boost cell regeneration, and is the product that makes the most difference to your skin, particularly if you aren’t using exfoliators, masks or rejuvenating serums,” suggests Amanda Birch.

2. The Trend-Seeker

You expect quick, visible results from your skincare, and always look for a new product that might work better than your last investment. You have several pots of moisturiser, cleanser and masks on the go, ready to use for your skin’s changing needs.

  • Pros: “This woman is always open to advice and is enthusiastic about looking after her skin. She won’t miss out on any part of her routine, whether it be cleansing and/or exfoliating or applying intensive treatments. And if she has a normal skin type, will generally benefit from her product,” says Amanda Birch.
  • Cons: “You can increase your risk of contact dermatitis, especially on sensitive skin, if you keep chopping and changing your products,” says Dr Jennifer Jones, British Skin Foundation dermatologist. “Remember that ingredients need the stated amount of time to work, so you won’t get overnight results from something that has been tested to show effects in 28 days.
  • If you do one thing: “Play around with the products that don’t really matter, but stick with the core ones that are necessary to treat your skin concerns. For example, if you are worried about wrinkles, always use a retinoid cream and just change around cleansers and moisturizers,” says Dr Baumann.

3. The Connoisseur

You take skincare seriously, are well versed in the latest products and know what works for your skin. You don’t mind taking the time to use a multi-step program, or investing in new technology.

  • Pros: “Using a lot of different products, adapted to different skin areas and skin needs will give outstanding results but in terms of tolerance, it is safer to use products from the same brand, as they are tested for compatibility,’ says Marie-Helene Lair.
  • Cons: Maintaining this level of commitment can be time-consuming and expensive. “It’s easy to get swept up in product promises – it’s really important to realize that unfortunately creams can’t work miracles,” adds Dr Jennifer Jones.
  • If you do one thing: “Make your products even more beneficial,” says Lair, “by doing a specific facial massage, as instructed with your product. There is a real synergy between formulas and massage to boost efficiency of active ingredients and stimulating the skin.” Don’t forget that diet, exercise and lifestyle have a huge impact on the way your skin looks and behaves. You may find it easier to choose a new do-all cream with multi-benefits to cut out a step or two of your regimen.

4. The Pragmatist

You’ve found a range of products you love and suit your skin. You stockpile when there’s a special offer on and see no reason to look for anything new.

  • Pros: “You won’t have any issues about reacting to a product,” says Amanda Birch. “Using your products more frequently than, say, the trend-seeker will mean you’ll see the long-term effects of products used daily,” adds Marie-Helene Lair.
  • Cons: “You could acquire tachyphylaxis when you’ve used something for a long time, meaning your product may stop working or may not produce the beneficial effects it once had,” explains Dr Jones. “The same happens with deodorant, shampoo and drugs – you have to increase the dosage to see a difference.” If you’re sticking with a product you first discovered years ago, there may be some huge scientific advances since then that you’re missing out on.
  • If you do one thing: “Analyse your skin at least once a year, or after a major life change such as a move to a new climate, pregnancy, menopause, a new stressful job or new diet,” advises Dr Baumann.

What is your skin care personality?

Serums 101

There’s a serum for each skin type and aging concern. Here are our top picks for every problem!

Dark Spots

Hydroquinone, which decreases the production of melanin and increases its breakdown, tops most dermatologists’ lists. A serum penetrates more deeply than a cream, especially paired with retinol or alpha hydroxy acid. However, hydroquinone can be irritating. Those whose skin can’t tolerate it can try serums containing arbutus (bearberry, mulberry, and cranberry extracts), kojic and azelaic acids, licorice, or vitamin C, which decrease melanin production with less irritation albeit more gradually.

We recommend:Dark Spots Serum

Wrinkles and Sagging

A serum with retinol, tetra peptides, or pentapeptides will rev collagen production, firming the skin, and could fade moderate lines in as little as two weeks. The sugar molecule rhamnose increases cel metabolism and helps generate collagen, along with elastin and anti-aging proteins. It also decreases enzymes that attack collagen. For a quick fix, look for formulas with argireline to relax wrinkles.

We recommend:Wrinkles & Sagging Serums

Sensitive Skin

Since serums tend to lack the emollients found in a cream that help buffer the active ingredients, those with very sensitive skin may not be able to tolerate some formulas, especially ones containing retinol or alpha hydroxy acids. Look for serums that contain anti-inflammatory antioxidants to help soothe the skin, like grape-seed, almond, and sesame-seed extracts and oils. If you’re still unsure of the ingredients your skin can handle, ask for samples and do a patch test determine which ones to avoid.

We recommend:Sensitive Skin Serums

Dry Skin

Look for a serum with hyaluronic acid, which hydrates and plumps. It’s commonly found it serums because it’s very thin and easy to wear under other products. And it’s also lipid-soluble, meaning it penetrates the skin;s protective barrier quickly and easily. (This a fortuitous, since those with dry skin skin will need to follow up with a lotion or cream containing occlusive ingredients, like shea butter.) Also, be sure to give the serum roughly 15 minutes to absorb before slathering on moisturizer.

We recommend:Dry Skin Serums

MUST HAVE: LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum

MUST HAVE: LiLash Purified Eyelash SerumWomen, who are not blessed with thick, sultry eyelashes or have observed their lashes falling out for one reason or another, have turned to eyelash growth products to regain what they have lost – including me!

I used to use Latisse on my lashes, but after a few months, the heavy price tag on the tiny prescription bottle left me budgeting just to afford my favorite lash boost. I loved my new longer lashes and didn’t want to give them up, but I could no longer justify spending $127.50 for a one month’s supply, plus doctor visit costs just to refill my prescription. Once my lashes returned to their original meager and pitiful selves, I set out to find a more affordable option.

After SkinMedix’s did a product feature on LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum, I decided to give it a try. Eight weeks of daily application, and my longer, fuller lashes are back! While I’m still paying $139.97 a bottle, I’m saving money on doctor visits because there’s no prescription needed. Also, you get double the product compared to Latisse, and since it comes in a self applying tube, you’re not wasting product by using drops on disposable brushes. (I always felt like half my Latisse was lost in those dinky brushes.) I’m now starting my third month and I still have more than half of the bottle left. I’ve read a lot of other reviews and most women are finding they get 6 months of daily use with one bottle. Unlike other eyelash growth serums, LiLash is used once daily for eight to twelve weeks. Then once you are satisfied with your lashes, you reduce use to only two times a week. In one year, I was spending $1530 on Latisse. Now I’m getting the same results for $279.94 – that’s a savings of $1250.06!

I didn’t experience any major side effects with this product. My eyes were a little itchy the first couple of days, but only as a result of using too much. Once I reduced the amount I was applying, the irritation stopped immediately. I learned a little goes a long way, and you don’t need more than one coat. If your eyes water at night, like mine do, I suggest using this product in the morning. My nightly tear production was washing the product down my face. I only discovered this when I found I was growing lash-like hair on my cheek bones! Not a cute look, to say the least. I now apply LiLash in the morning, instead of at night, and I haven’t experienced this problem since.

Check out my Before and After photos below:

BEFORE

AFTER 8 WEEKS

It looks like magic…but it’s REAL!

So how does LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum work? To answer this question, we need to take a closer look at the ingredients of Lilash. One of its main ingredients is Lupinus albus (commonly known as white lupin) seed extract. This extract contains the factor that stimulates eyelash growth. Lilash also contains Prunus amygdalus (or almond) seed extract, which accords protection to each eyelash thereby giving it protection. Another key ingredient is panthenol, a moisturizing agent that keeps eyelashes supple and glossy and less prone to breakage. Silica, also included, prevents the eyelashes from breaking.

How to Apply LiLash:

  1. Apply once a day, morning or evening, to clean dry skin. Allow LiLash to dry for 2 to 3 minutes before applying other cosmetics.
  2. Remove the applicator from the tube and carefully wipe off any excess product on the inside of the tube.
  3. Apply the applicator to the skin of the upper eyelid along the lash line from inner to outer corner of the eye. See illustration below.
A single application stroke is all that is required. LiLash is highly concentrated so little is needed for your best lashes.

Ditch the expensive brand and stop fussing with messy glues and fake lashes, and experience the luxury of your own natural long lashes. With one swipe of your mascara, and you will be camera ready!

Have you used LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum? What was your experience? Send me your Before and After photos to gina@skinmedix.com! I would love to see them!
